Minutes of the Pastoral Council Meeting on February 21, 2019

for St. Andrew/St. Ann Parish


Present:  Cindy Canning, Rebecca Korando, Linda Kranawetter, Linda Porter Smith, Mark Williams, Rob Kippenbrock, Deacon Don, Garrett Cook, Linda Bunselmeyer, Angelo Fiorino, and Jennifer Craig.

Absent: Kevin Junk

Excused:  Fr. Gary, Bill Schwartz, Audrey Arnold, Theresa Madel, and Jessica Fritsche

Meeting opened at 6:05 pm.

Opening prayer was led by Deacon Don.

Minutes were reviewed, and a motion was made by Linda Porter-Smith to approve the minutes, and Linda Kranawetter seconded the motion. All were in favor.

Committee Reports

Spiritual Evolvement:

40 Days/40 Cards of Lent: Cindy Canning is coordinating this program and it will be advertised in the bulletin, on the website, and on our facebook account. Sign-up deadline is March 1st.

Find Your Greatness: Tickets are on sale online and will be sold after masses at St. Andrew, St. Ann, Newman Center and St. Francis this weekend. Planning is ongoing, and the committee will meet again at 5:30 on March 21st. The event will be on held on March 30th

Hospitality/Community Life

Outreach Ministry for Sick/Homebound: Linda Porter-Smith reported that she would like to advertise in the bulletin and on our website. Anyone can call the rectory office, and Cindy Thompson or Debbie Pitman will coordinate prayer requests, home visits, or help meet any special needs.

Fellowship Weekend and Children�s Mass: There was a good turnout at last Sunday�s mass. The school will coordinate these each month.


Communication of events/cancellations for both St. Andrew and St. Ann was encouraged to be sent to all parishioners at both parishes, through text messages/Remind and email, etc., since many people go to mass at both places.

Physical Facilities:

No report.



Old Business

Ministry Recruitment Fair: Linda Porter Smith will coordinate this event. She will email the contact person for each ministry, and ask them to prepare information for a table at the KC Hall. It will be held the first weekend of May, after the 11:00 mass, during the Chicken Dinner. A commitment Sunday will be held the following weekend. Cindy suggested a new ministry that could be developed would be the Fellowship weekend ministry. Another ministry might be Block Captains, to reach out to parishioners in each section of the church to get to know people. A table for the Welcoming committee will be coordinated by Linda Porter-Smith. Cindy will advertise in the bulletin about the upcoming Ministry fair.  

Pastoral Council Elections: Nominations for the council are being accepted. Frank Riley agreed to be on the ballot. Cindy will put information in the bulletin and ask Fr. Gary to make an announcement in church this weekend. Anyone can contact Cindy if they would be interested. Elections will be March 23rd/24th.

Stations of the Cross: Rob reported that different groups will be responsible each week to lead the Stations. They will be held each Friday at 7:00 pm at St. Andrew. Rob will develop a flyer or ads for the bulletin. The schedule includes:
March 8th: Cursillo groups, Women�s Bible Studies, and Parish Bible Study

March 15th: Pastoral Council, School Board, and Finance Council

March 22nd: Parish Youth, 4:13 Youth Group

March 29th: St. Andrew School

April 5th: Knights of Columbus, St. Ann Sodality, Altar Society

April 12: St. Andrew School

New Business:

Lenten plans were discussed and include the following:

Ash Wednesday:  Mass at St. Andrew at 8:30 a.m., and also 4:30 p.m. at St. Andrew, and 7 p.m. at St. Ann.

Holy Week schedule:  Holy Thursday at St. Andrew at 6:30 p.m.; Good Friday at St. Ann at 3:00 p.m., and Holy Saturday at St. Andrew at 8:00 p.m. Easter Sunday will be regular masses.

Mark will ask Patti to assist with set-up and coordination for Holy Thursday mass.

Faith and Family Group Night at Miner�s vs. Grizzlies: Cindy reported that July 7th is an opportunity for our church parishioners to attend the game. This event will be referred to the youth groups to participate in.

A Family Outreach Center (FOC) of Catholic Charities of Southern Illinois will open on 202 N. 14th St., Murphysboro. Deacon Don reported that the office will provide assistance for literacy training, computer training, providing baby products, hygiene kits, and possibly budget management. Four people on the committee include Sandy and Bill Schwartz, and Gloria and Dennis Radek. It will be opening in March. There will be flyers about information about the catholic church at the center. Referrals to other agencies will be provided. It will be open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-3. Funding will come from donations and grants.   

Letter from Bishop: Linda Porter Smith provided a letter written by Bishop Braxton, to be distributed to all parishioners. This is regarding the IL law about abortions. Rebecca will email the letters to parishioners. It will also be put on the website and may be read at mass.

Grandparenting Small Group: Angelo Fiorino discussed his Grandparenting small group that is starting soon. A flyer was placed in the bulletin last weekend.


Rebecca made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and Linda Porter Smith seconded the motion.  All were in favor.

Closing prayer was led by Rob Kippenbrock.

The meeting ended at 7:05.

The next parish council meeting is scheduled for March 21st, at 6pm.
